From her beginnings as an every other week Bible study in the living room at a house on Kingsley, this ministry has maintained a strong conviction that discipleship demands service to the spiritual, emotion, and material needs of the community. Inasmuch as our small assembly has been blessed beyond measure we have made it a point to serve those who whomever God provides opportunity for us to bless. Here you cans see some of what we have do beyond “having church.” Please see our “Support” page to assist in these endeavors if you feel lead.

Adopt-A-Teacher

Over the last two years Disciples of Christ has adopted five teachers from three Akron Public Schools. Teachers often have to come out of pocket to cover classroom supplies when the demands of their job exceed the budget allocated them by the city. These dedicated wonderful people pull from their own paychecks to be more effective in educating our children. We felt led by the Lord to raise funds from the community and amongst ourselves in order to partner with them in their endeavors and allow them to keep more of their money for themselves and their families. Each adopted teacher receives a few hundred dollars throughout the school year as need arises to purchase classroom materials.

Additionally Disciples of Christ has given away bookbags filled with half a year’s school supplies, provided entire Thanksgiving dinners to families in need, partnered with Akron Public Schools to provide winter clothes, Christmas gifts, and food to children of single parent households, and myriad of other things that are only known to God and the people we serve, or without their knowledge. As disciples we are instructed not to make a spectacle of the good we do, but it is also important that people know that they are important to us because they are important to God. He sees them, knows them, loves them, sees their need, and sends us by to be a bless them on His behalf. Special thanks to Lady Carmen Armour who serves as our Director of Community Ministries..
